Senior Engineer for Thermal Processes
Turnkey distillation plants and mass transfer solutions
Experts with know-how
We offer comprehensive distillation solutions for the chemical process industry and develop and supply fully automated, turnkey distillation plants (from process design through manufacturing and control system integration to commissioning). In addition, we manufacture and supply a wide range of distillation packing materials and media, enabling our customers to achieve higher capacities, lower pressure drops, improved separation performance, and superior mass transfer efficiency.
Senior Engineer (m/f/d) for Thermal Processes – Turnkey Distillation Plants and Mass Transfer Solutions
full-time
Job Description
Senior Thermal Process Engineer, serving as the technical lead responsible for distillation process solutions—from customer acquisition and process development through detailed planning, automation strategy, delivery, and commissioning to performance validation. This position combines in-depth knowledge of distillation with expertise in mass transfer and packing materials to develop and optimize compact, automated distillation systems and recommend packing materials that maximize separation performance and energy efficiency
Main Responsibilities
The primary focus of the role is on team leadership, but the successful candidate should be willing and able to demonstrate a hands-on approach when necessary.
Design of turnkey distillation solutions (end-to-end)
- Management of the technical development of turnkey distillation plants, including column configuration, heat exchange networks, utility lines, instrumentation, automation concepts, and overall process safety design.
- Translating customer requirements into concrete results: the basis for control and system design, heat and mass balances, and process flow diagrams.
- Supporting the mechanical and electrical/control teams with layout and construction.
- Modeling, design, optimization, and validation of thermal processes
- Definition and Analysis of Key Performance Indicators
Automation and Integrated Control Strategy
- Participation in defining the functional requirements for automated distillation systems, including control sequences, recipe management, interlocks, etc.
- Monitoring of support for FAT/SAT and planning of on-site commissioning.
Mass transfer, components, and packing materials
- Technical consulting in the fields of mass transfer and thermodynamics
- Assistance in selecting or designing packing media and components to maximize performance and efficiency
Technical management and quote preparation in direct contact with customers
- Participate in meetings regarding client projects and on-site visits to define the scope and objectives.
- Assistance with preparing proposals for new projects.
- Assistance with recommendations for eliminating bottlenecks and improving the efficiency of existing systems.
Safety, Compliance, and Quality
- Participation in PHA/HAZOP/LOPA, support for MOC, and reviews of design safety
- Ensure that the design complies with applicable regulations/standards and the customers' EHS requirements
- Review and approval of the necessary documents for delivery to the customer
Leadership role in engineering
- Mentoring of young engineers; establishing repeatable technical standards and documenting best practices for turnkey designs and packing applications
Your profile
- Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, process engineering, or thermodynamics (Master's degree preferred).
- 7–12+ years Professional experience process engineering, with a focus on distillation and thermal separation processes
- Proven knowledge and expertise in the following areas:
- Thermodynamics
- A basic understanding of distillation and the principles of mass transfer is helpful
- Process design, including column hydraulics, control systems, and utility connections
- Experience in supporting customer-focused engineering (requirements definition, assistance with preparing proposals, technical presentations) and/or in delivering turnkey systems.
- Microsoft Windows and Office applications
- Knowledge of explosion protection regulations and the associated system design principles is a plus
- Certification as a Professional Engineer (PE) is preferred
- Experience with Aspen Plus, Aspen HYSYS, ChemCAD, or ProMax is a plus
